Acupuncture is an ancient medicine, originally used in China, but now practiced worldwide and is one of the most commonly used complementary medicines in the UK.

AcupunctAcupuncture head points London ure treats the underlying causes of disease as well as the signs and symptoms of specific conditions. Treating the root of the condition can lead to a more permanent resolution of your problems.

Traditional acupuncture is based on the Chinese philosophy that our body's energy or qi (pronounced 'chee') should flow smoothly around the body.  When the qi becomes blocked or unbalanced, illness can result. Very fine needles are inserted at chosen points to influence the energy and aim to restore equilibrium.

There is increasing understanding of how acupuncture works in Western medical terms. A common theory is that the nerve endings are stimulated by the needles and bring about subtle changes in the brain to affect the way the body reacts to pain and illness.

Many people come to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition, such as nausea or osteoarthritis of the knee.

Some chose to have treatment because they generally feel unwell, but don't have a specific diagnosis.

Others have acupuncture for the prevention of disease and the maintenance of good health and well being.

In 2009, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS as a cost-effective short-term treatment for the management of chronic lower back pain.

As traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms, it can be effective for a wide range of conditions

Each patient's treatment plan is different, so to find out about other patient's experiences and to discuss whether acupuncture is right for you, please feel free to contact Catherine for a free 10 minute consultation.

Catherine practices 2 styles of acupuncture: Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM, which focuses typically on specific (often physical) symptoms and the Five Element approach considers the person and looks at fundamental imbalances. Both styles are important and by combining these she is able to offer a truly integrated treatment, tailoring the best type of treatment for individual needs.

Traditional acupuncture treatment involves using very fine, sterile, single use needles to move energy in various points in the body. Patients are usually surprised at how painless these are.

Other therapies may also be incorporated into a treatment, such as Acupressure, Moxibustion (a mild heating technique), Tuina (Chinese Massage) and Cupping (using suction to move energy).

The first appointment will involve taking a full Case history in order for the practitioner to develop a diagnosis before a treatment is given.  This appointment can be up to 90 minutes. Subsequent treatments will be approximately 45 - 60 minutes, depending on the treatment required.
